Top Teams in Portuguese Premier League History

Even before it was named Liga ZON Sagres for sponsorship purposes, the Portugese first division football league has always been very interesting. You can expect beautiful plays and amazing football attractions being performed in almost every match of the league. Certain teams are doing well throughout the league’s history, and we are going to check them out in this part.

The most successful team in the history of Portuguese football league would have to be Benfica. The team won no less than 32 league trophies including their series of amazing performances – victories and runner-up finished – in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1994. They also finished as league runner-up 24 times, proving their spectacular performance over the years.

Next, we have F.C. Porto. Although Porto is doing fantastically well in international competitions, the team won only 24 league trophies and finished as runner-up 24 times. They also won the last four league trophies consecutively, starting from 2006 all the way to the 2009 league. Porto is considered Benfica’s closest rival of all time.

Next, we have Sporting CP that scored 18 league victories and 19 runner-up finishes over the team’s history. It is interesting to see what Sporting CP can do this year, especially after they showed great improvements over the past four years.

Both Belenenses and Boavista recorder one league victory, in 1946 for Belenenses and in 2001 for Boavista. These two teams also finished as league runner-up three times over the league’s history, while Académica de Coimbra, Vitória de Setúbal, and Braga each finished as league runner-up once.
